Embracing Your Midlife Journey

When I started this website, I was in the midst of a midlife transition. My marriage of almost 30 years was over, and I was in a new relationship. My kids were on their own, and I was caring for my elderly mother. I was in my mid-50s and still on this journey of self-discovery.

The journey began in my late 40s and is never-ending, although it has definitely evolved from where it began, just as I have. I’m now in my 60s, and my mother has returned to her bliss. I look back at the woman who was so lost 12 to 15 years ago, and I barely recognize her. But in my newly gained wisdom, I can clearly see how the events and circumstances of my life have shaped me into the woman I am today.

Discovering Yourself Through Dynamic Living

As I’ve evolved, so has this website. When I chose the name for my business, Dynamic Living By Design, I had a vague idea of what it would represent, and now I am crystal clear on its meaning and its purpose.

Like so many, when I got out of high school, I had no idea who I was or what I wanted. So I set out to discover life with no direction and ended up basically reacting to whatever was placed in my path, or in some cases, thrown at me.

Had I known then what I know now, I definitely would have made different choices! Of course, hindsight is always 20/20. But, it doesn’t really matter now because the choices have been made and they have led me to where I am now and the person I have become. And one thing I know for sure is that I’m not the only woman to find herself at the crossroads of midlife, trying to figure out who she is and what she wants the second half of her life to look like.

And that’s where “Dynamic Living by Design” comes in!

When used to describe a person, the word “dynamic” means “positive in attitude and full of energy and new ideas." Those who know me will tell you that I fit that description to a "T!" And “living by design” is what I have learned to do while on this midlife journey.

Design Your Life for a Brighter Future

I spent the first part of my life reacting to life. I had no direction and no plan. When I realized that my life might have been much different had I taken the time to really figure out who I was and what I wanted at a young age, I vowed to change that!

And that’s when I began to design my life.

In the years since, I’ve still had many ups and downs and dodged a ton of curveballs, but they don’t completely derail me the way they once did. I’ve learned what is most important to me and what doesn’t serve me. I’ve learned to be much more discerning about the people I allow into my inner circle. And I’ve learned to honor the gifts I came into this life with and to use them for the betterment of my world.

I now have a clear vision of how I want my life to be, and I have a plan to make it a reality. I am now living each day by design, and I wake up and greet each day with excitement because I know that the choices I make today will bring me another step closer to my ultimate goals in life.

Becoming the Architect of Your Life

You may be wondering what is involved in designing your life. Here are the steps I took and that I now share with my clients:

Assessment - The first step on the journey is to take a personal assessment of where you are now; what is working, and what is not. This is one of the hardest steps because you have to be brutally honest with yourself.
Priorities - This step is where you'll determine the most important elements that your new lifestyle must embody and the things of your current life that you will not allow to intrude into your ideal lifestyle.
Direction - Now that you've reflected on the past and taken an honest look at your current lifestyle to assess what you love and what you don't, it's time to begin looking forward.
Brainstorming - Some people call it brainstorming, and others call it mind mapping. Whatever you choose to call it, in this exercise, you'll begin the process of planning your new life.
Decisions - In the previous exercises you've identified several potential directions you can go in to create your ideal lifestyle, it's time to narrow them down and decide which one you will focus on.
Research - By now you will have identified a clear direction toward your ideal lifestyle, now it’s time to find out exactly what it will require to get you where you choose to be.
Opportunity - You've done your homework, and it's time to design your dream opportunity. Using all the information you gathered in the research phase, you can begin to create a plan to pull it all together and make it a reality.
Follow your heart - One of the biggest hurdles you encounter will be YOU! So be prepared and keep on the lookout for the times when you get in your way.

We frequently hear that our "golden years" are the best years of our lives, while at the same time, we witness so many seniors seemingly languishing while they wait for time. I have come to realize that those who have taken the time to design their lives are the ones who are enjoying every moment life has to offer. And those who are merely waiting for time are the ones who continue to live their lives reacting to what came at them rather than designing a life they love.

How Will You Choose to Live the Second Half of Your Life?

The choice is yours: will you continue to react to life or take control and become the architect of your own destiny? Embrace the midlife journey and unlock your potential through dynamic living and designing the life you truly desire. You have the power to make the second half of your life the most fulfilling, purpose-driven, and exciting part yet.
